  • What grass should I plant?

A variety of grasses thrive in our zone 7 climate.

    • Fescue - primarily a cool-season grass that does well in shade.
    • Bermuda - typically a warm-season grass that goes dormant in the winter. It’s increasingly popular in new landscaping sites because it’s more drought tolerant than fescue.
    • Centipede - a warm-season grass that thrives in coastal areas. It’s a creeping spreader, and it’s also low maintenance.
    • Zoysia is a warm-season, drought-tolerant grass, but it requires more care and maintenance than other grasses.

  • How often should I fertilize my lawn?

Although every lawn is different, in general fertilization should be done every seven to eight weeks. Do not fertilize during drought periods, and high-nitrogen fertilizers should be avoided when watering options are poor.

  • What's the difference between pre-emergence and post-emergence weed treatment?

    • Pre-emergence treatments are designed to prevent the germination, growth, and spread of weeds in existing lawns and should not be applied close to yard seeding times.
    • Post-emergence treatments are applied directly to existing weeds and kills them. We select herbicides that target weeds while limiting negative effects on the grass you want to keep.
    • Non-selective herbicide is useful when you want to eliminate all existing vegetation, including grass.

  • When should I aerate my lawn?

Because you want to avoid temperature extremes, spring and fall are the best times to aerate.

  • When does Bermuda grass go dormant?

Bermuda grass goes brown and dormant in the autumn, when temperatures fall consistently below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once Bermuda has entered dormancy, do not cut it until temperatures are consistently above 48 degrees Fahrenheit and the dangers of a hard freeze are past.

Although some lawns will green up sooner than others, in our Zone 7 climate, you should wait until middle or late April to mow.
